Ma La noodle (recommended by chef and Mr Ang) RM14.90

12 February 2017

Mr. Ang really like this restaurant’s noodle. The restaurant served a variety of noodles. For instance, rice vermicelli, ramen, and brown rice noodle. Vegetarian-friendly dishes are available too. To add on, the restaurant has this serene and calm oriental tea house interior design. I feel very comfortable to be surrounded by tea pot and faint tea smell.

Mr Ang is very quiet when he eat his bowl of noodle. He only mentioned that he is in love with this Ma La noodle. It so hard to get taste description from him. I can only observed from his eating gesture.

Vegetarian Bakery @vBurgCafe, Skudai

Vegetarian bakery in Johor Bahru

9 February 2017

When I first vBurgCafe post on theIskandarian and ynz214 blog, I am very happy. Finally, I can
choose vegetarian bakery for my diet. When I was pregnant around 5 weeks, I had a very bad cough. I visited Chinese traditional medical practitioner and was instructed not to consume chicken and egg. After I stop eating chicken and egg, my cough reduced and gone. Since then, I consume  more vegetarian meal. That why I am very happy when vBurgCafe is here.

Mr. Sean Tan is the founder of this cafe. He is a vegetarian since young. His passion is baking. Thus, he has visited many countries to learn different baking methods.

To add on, vBurgCafe’s bakery is divided into 3 different categories:

  • Ovo-Lacto vegetarian 蛋奶素 – contain egg and dairy products
  • Lacto-vegetarian 奶素 – contained dairy products
  • Vegan 全素 – exclude egg and dairy products.

I love this categories concept. I can easily choose bread for my lactose intolerance dad. While I can enjoy Lacto vegetarian bread without suffering any allergic effect.

Brocoli baguette RM4.80
Broccoli baguette RM4.80

Mok Mama choose this dish. The reason is broccoli captured her attention. She seldom see broccoli on top of baguette. I prefer the vegetable spread on top of this bread. The combination of pesto, cashew nut, parsley, broccoli and olive oil produced a super healthy spread.

Pumpkin soup with rye bread RM12.90
Pumpkin soup with rye bread RM12.90

A warm milky pumpkin soup with rye bread is very filling. rye bread is made of german black wheat. the texture is very hard and take sometime to chew.  Every spoonful of pumpkin soup can taste the pumpkin sweetness. The chef emphasis on good and quality ingredients for all his menu.

Otah croissant RM3.60
Otah croissant RM3.60

Otah croissant is the most popular dish in the cafe. Otah spices are mixed with tofu to create smooth and spicy texture. I am very surprised that the otah cream on the top of croissant is cold. However, the otah inside the croissant is hot.  Theses hot and cold combination create a different sensation in diner’s mouth.

Before we leave the shop, the chef is experimenting new dishes. That is vegetarian burger. It will be launched soon(18 February 2017). Hopefully, I can try it on the next visit.

Fish Dishes @ Rujia Chinese Restaurant, Skudai

19 December 201619 December 2016

I enjoy eating fresh fish dishes. In Chinese cooking, there are many ways to cook fish.I enjoy eating steam fish. Today, we going to try different SiChuan (四川 )fish cooking methods.

Sichuan Radish Pickles 萝卜皮 as appetizer
Sichuan Radish Pickles 萝卜皮 as appetizer

Homemade SiChuan radish pickles is seldom found in Malaysia. Local radish is washed and dried . Then it is soaked in special salted water with some chilies. Don’t be intimidated by red chilies. It is not that spicy. Instead, it is very crunchy. For me, this is very suitable to eat with white porridge.

12 Dumpling RM10.00

We like to try some dumpling with different flavours. The green dumpling is garlic chives flavour 韭菜, while famous for its pungent smell. My family members also prefer this green dumpling.
On the other hand, the white dumpling is Chinese cabbage pickle flavour. Chinese cabbage is sour in taste but once mixed with pork mince and shrimp, it is fabulous. Thick dumpling skin is used to trap down the pork paste savourly taste.

Home Secret Braised Pork 私房红烧肉 RM28.00
Family Secret Braised Pork 私房红烧肉 RM28.00

Big chunks of pork belly are braised with the soy sauce and own homemade sauce. It is sweet, but not greasy at all.

Tok chilies steam fish 剁椒烧鱼 RM48.00

We had tried 3 type of fish cuisine. “Tok chilies” is a cuisine name created by Mr. Ang. We were not sure what is the English word for “Tuo Jiao”. Why not have some local name for it? Tok chilies is one of the method to process the chilies. Fresh red chilies are washed and chopped. Then, the chopped chilies are drained and dehydrated. Next, the chopped chilies are made into pickle which remained the redness of chilies. I love this dish as it is sourly and spicy. It must be eat while hot as the sourly and spicy taste will be at its climax to suit with the steam fish.

Zhu Ge Grilled Fish 诸葛烤鱼 RM58.00

According to Baidu encyclopedia, Zhuge 诸葛亮 is one of the smartest military general in Chinese History. Zhuge grilled fish was one of his favourite dish. Firstly, grill the fresh fish into golden brown. Secondly, prepare a special rectangular hot pot. Thirdly, fill in the hot pot with seasonal fresh vegetables. Fourthly, place the grilled fish in the hot pot. Finally, pour mala based soup into the hot pot & let it boil. SiChuan is added to give numbness sensation to diners’ tongues.

The fresh fish is firstly grilled till golden brown. Secondly, prepare a special rectangle hot pot q and filled up with seasonal fresh vegetable. Placed the grilled fish in the pot. Then the mala 麻辣 based soup is poured into the hot pot and boil。 This dish has a unique pungency and spicy taste. SiChuan pepper is added to give a numbness kick to diners tongue.

Fresh seasonal vegetables such as lady fingers, mushrooms, potatoes and tofu are added to give this dish some nutrients. That was the reason ZhuGe was extremely smart.

Squirrel fish 松鼠鱼 RM38.00

Deep fried fish in sweet and sour sauce is very suitable for kid. The chef has removed all the fish bone and sliced the meat into check-box. When, the sliced fish is fried in oil, the fish will present itself in check box shape. That is how squirrel fish name come about.

Steam lady finger with garlic RM8.00

Philips, Homemaker’s Store in Johor Bahru

Philips lifestyle store is in Sutera Mall, Johor Bahu.
Philips Brand store is in Sutera Mall, Johor Bahu.

The Philips Brand Store is the second store in Malaysia.  Why Philips need to set up its brand store? I think the best answer is from my beloved mother – a Philips brand loyalty .

List of Philips brand electronic appliances in my house.
List of Philips brand electronic appliances in my house.

My mother trusts Philips brand very much.   Here is the list of items in my house.

  • Sandwich maker
  • Blender
  • Fruit juice maker
  • Hair straighter ( My sister bought it 10 years ago)
  • Light green hair dryer (My sister bought it 10 years ago)
  • Dark green hair dryer (My mother bought it 30 years ago. It is still functioning very well)
  • High-pressure cooker (We are still learning to use it)

All these items she bought from various point of sales, either in hypermarkets (E.G. JUSCO or Giant) or electrical shops along five-foot way. Just like any other shopper for household electrical appliances, there are more than a hundred, both local and foreign brands in the above-mentioned point of sales.

The employee was explaining high pressure cooker usage and information to my mother

I followed a few trips with her to shop for the above items. I noticed she would ignore any sale promoters of other brands who kept pursuing her to buy their brands. She also not tempted by any free gifts or promotional prices of similar item offered by other brands. She would just walk to Philips? I wonder why?
These are her answers:
She knew the ‘history of Philips”. Philips is one of the earliest or pioneer brands of consumer electrical appliances, founded more than 125 years ago by Dutch. Laymen like her used the term as ‘Continental brands’ with brand image of trustworthy, reliable, safety, and practicality. Most importantly, all Philips items are easy to wash after used. She just washes and rinse with running water, with little brushing, later air dry them and put back to the shelf.

Her first 30 years old hairdryer is very handy, safe and convenient to use. Similarly with her fruit juicers, blender and sandwich-maker which are her helping maid in the kitchen. She prepares fresh fruit and vegetable juices and sandwiches most of the morning before she goes to work. The fine, pure juices extract from Philips keep our family members healthy. As we love spicy food, she would use the blender to grind chilies paste and other spices ingredients for chicken curry, she also blends barley grain after boiling barley water for us. She always says, “Without all these Philips helpers. We won’t have any healthy home cook food.

Without all these Philips helpers, We won’t have any healthy home cook food.”

It has never crossed our mind that there would be a specialist Philips Brand Store in Sutera Mall. To us, specialist store only refers to branded upmarket fashion products like Louis Vuitton where there are retail associates who give personalise services to customers by sharing story line behind each of their products.

Baby related products from Philips.
Baby related products from Philips.

It is indeed very resourceful for both of us after our first visit to this very Special- ALL PHILIPS Products”. Wow~ more handy – Philips air fryer, Philips slow- grind juicers, induction to vacuum  cleaners, baby item and etc. So, next time, you can stop by this store for better understanding on Philips products.
