JOHOR BAHRU, 3 September 2024 – At the prize-giving ceremony held today at LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort, the climax of the LEGOLAND School Challenge 2024, sixteen school groups were recognised for their exceptional LEGO® creations.
The third year of the yearly challenge was even more successful than the previous two, with schools from all around Asia participating for the first time and receiving a great reception. There were a record-breaking 3,700 kids from over the region that participated in the competition, submitting 554 entries (a 50% increase from last year). Submissions from China, Thailand, and Laos, in particular, showed that the challenge was still attracting international interest.
Fifty LEGO sets were supplied to schools around Malaysia this year by LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, the Ministry of Education (MOE), and Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri (JPN). These schools would not have been able to participate otherwise. More students felt empowered to bring their creative concepts to reality and participate in the challenge thanks to the Ministry’s support in identifying and reaching these schools.
The cross-cultural potential of this year’s challenge topic, “World of Fantasy,” was further heightened by these attempts to broaden the challenge’s appeal to varied and foreign backgrounds. The child builders incorporated tales influenced by local and global folklore into their LEGO creations, which ranged from vivid and magical landscapes to magnificent mythological creatures.
Out of all the LEGO creations, the top sixteen stood out. Expert LEGO builders, designers, and devoted lifelong fans made up the judging panel, and they were all astounded by the level of technical expertise, ingenuity, and creativity on exhibit. With so many competitors from around the world this year, the rivalry was fiercer than ever. It is worth mentioning that the winning teams, hailing from Malaysia, stood out from the formidable 1111international field with their genuinely exceptional and extraordinary constructions.
Both LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort and the LEGOLAND School Challenge call Johor home, and we couldn’t be prouder. In addition to highlighting the skills and imagination of our young people, this event is in perfect harmony with the state’s efforts to advance STEM education. It warms my heart to see so many schools from Johor taking part; it shows how committed and enthusiastic our pupils are about trying new things and being creative. In his role as Menteri Besar Johor, YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz Bin Ghazi emphasised the importance of events like this in training the future generation of leaders, as the state’s educational system strives to promote innovation and learning.
As a strategic partner, we are pleased to back LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s efforts to provide students and educators with a stimulating setting for hands-on learning, where kids can improve their STEM-related abilities and social skills in an enjoyable and interactive setting. Furthermore, we take great pride in the LEGOLAND School Challenge winners since they epitomise the boundless potential of Malaysia’s youth as future architects, engineers, and business moguls. In a statement made by Zainal Bin Abas, Deputy Director General of Education Malaysia, the organisation expressed its admiration for the students’ entries and expressed its intention to continue supporting similar efforts going forward.
The LEGOLAND School Challenge is near and dear to our hearts since it is a program that reflects the core of LEGO’s DNA, which is learning through play. This year, we broke records for entries, welcomed teams from all across Asia, and, most importantly, were able to lower the entry fee for students from low-income families across the country. We are elated by these accomplishments and grateful for your support. Thank you to the Malaysian government for their support, which has allowed us to achieve this success. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to improve education in Malaysia. The Divisional Director of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, CS Lim, expressed the resort’s renewed dedication to the program and its goal of attracting more foreign teams in the upcoming year.
The grand reward for the 16 winning teams was over RM100,000 and included LEGO Play Sets, famous trophies and a chance to attend a special LEGO Building Workshop with an expert LEGO model builder. The lucky participants had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of LEGO construction from the experts in the field at this exclusive workshop.
I can honestly say that participating in the LEGOLAND School Challenge was the highlight of my life. From my time as a SEA LIFE Junior Ranger when I was ten years old, to being able to take part in this challenge for the past three years running, LEGOLAND has been my favourite theme park. It’s about more than just constructing LEGO models; it’s also about enjoying myself, expanding my social circle, and pushing myself to my limits. It’s been fantastic moving from following directions to making up my own designs. After completing this challenge, I am even more determined than before to pursue a career in the arts—perhaps even becoming a LEGOLAND Master Model Builder! Nathanael Yap, a student at Campus Rangers International School and the grand prize winner in the secondary school category, expressed his belief that anything is possible with passion and vision.
About the LEGOLAND School Challenge:
Designed to encourage imagination and originality in kids ranging from seven to seventeen years old, the LEGOLAND School Challenge takes place once a year. The goal of the competition is for participants to construct LEGO models that reflect the subject, which is “World of Fantasy” this year. Students are given a practical opportunity to study STEM principles through collaboration and critical thinking in this challenge, which also incorporates creative storytelling. Because it is open to schools all around Asia, the competition serves as a great venue for students to learn about other cultures and advance their education.
In honour of the teams’ outstanding skill and effort, the winning LEGO models will be on display at MINILAND in LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort until 31 December 2024.
