Gemini 3 Hackathon reflexive experience

Feng Shui Banana: My Reflexive Journey at Gemini 3 Hackathon

10 January 2026 will always stand out as one of those “just go with the flow” days. It all started when Mr. Chan casually asked around 19 Dec 2025, “Want to join the Gemini 3 Hackathon at Google Singapore?” I said yes without thinking too much.  Initially, I even asked if we could do something related to finance and audit—but he wasn’t keen. So, I proposed GeoHarmony, an idea to analyze Singapore business locations using Feng Shui principles. It felt aligned with my research interest in machine learning and Chinese metaphysics. I quickly built a prototype in Google AI Studio, shared the link, and Mr. Chan submitted it. Later, he asked me to recruit two more members—Benny and WK joined.

When Google DeepMind x 65 Labs approved our submission out of 800 entries, reality hit: we were going to Google Singapore! We decided to carpool with Mr. Chan and make it a team adventure.

First Impressions: A Google Moment

Google Developer Space

We left Johor early, crossed Tuas checkpoint, and by 8:30 AM, we were at Google Singapore. The exterior was stunning—modern, sleek, and everything I imagined. Walking into the open workspace felt surreal. Google has always been on my bucket list, and here I was, standing inside.

Breakfast at the Google Café was another highlight. Initially, we thought of grabbing McDonald’s, but why spend money when Google offers free food? It was a true “Google moment.”

Team Dynamics & Emotions

The night before, I was so nervous I couldn’t sleep. This hackathon felt different from the ones I’d joined before. Meanwhile, Mr. Chan was completely zen, and the others were relaxed—they were here for the experience. None of them had hackathon exposure, but that didn’t stop us from diving in.

Thanks to team members’ Zen environment

Challenges & Pivot

Things got interesting when the organizers announced the six hackathon tracks. I had doubts—did our idea even fit? After brainstorming, we decided to pivot. Instead of GeoHarmony, we built Fengshui Banana, focusing on Track 6: Real-Time Multimodal Experiences using Gemini Live API.

We integrated an open-source Bazi project from GitHub to calculate suitable colors and career positions based on birth data. This gave our app a unique twist—real-time Feng Shui insights powered by AI.

Tools We Used

To bring Fengshui Banana to life during the Gemini 3 Hackathon, we explored and integrated several cutting-edge tools and APIs:

  • Gemini Live API – For real-time multimodal interactions and instant feedback.
  • Claude Code – Assisted with vibe coding and rapid prototyping.
  • Nano Banana – Used for creative prompt engineering and generative features.
  • Google AI Studio – Initial prototype development and testing environment.
  • GitHub – Hosted our open-source Feng Shui logic based on Bazi calculations.

These tools allowed us to combine traditional metaphysics with modern AI, creating a unique experience for users.

Highlights & Learnings

When I saw our project approved by Google DeepMind, I thought, “Cool—maybe Google is starting to take an interest in Chinese metaphysics!”

Technically, I learned a lot:

  • Vibe coding with Claude Code for fast iterations
  • Prompt engineering for Nano Banana
  • Importance of listing all Google tech used in the README

Networking was minimal—I was too tired after seven hours of coding—but I did meet Sean, a startup engineer, and a reporter from Business Insider.

Personal growth? Definitely. I realized hackathons push you to use every tool available and think creatively under pressure.

Reflection & Future Plans

One surprise: hackathons in Singapore have no age limit! In Malaysia, most do. Seven hours of vibe coding was exhausting—fun once in a while, but not something I’d do regularly at my senior level.

Will we continue developing Fengshui Banana? Maybe. If the team has ideas to monetize it, I’m in. For now, I’m grateful for the experience, the learning, and the chance to step inside Google Singapore.

Final Thought: Sometimes, the best experiences come from saying “yes” without overthinking. This hackathon reminded me that innovation often starts with curiosity—and a little bit of spontaneity.
